HOUNDS LOSE 1-0 TO HARRISBURG

Harrisburg City Islanders           1 (Cody Reinberg 34’)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds              0

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds dropped their second match in a row, a 1-0 home defeat to the Harrisburg City Islanders.  It was also the second time in a week that the Isles shut out Pittsburgh.

The Islanders had a few shots early and both attempts were stoned by goalkeeper Dan Waltman.  The Riverhounds had their chances as well, but the game remained scoreless.

In the 17th minute, Hounds defender Ed Hayden was given a yellow card for a rough tackle.

The Riverhounds had an opportunity on a corner kick, but midfielder Justin Evans’ shot sailed over the net.

The Riverhounds were issued another yellow card in the 29th minute, when forward Randolph Jerome was called for diving.

Harrisburg struck in the 34th minute when Cody Reinberg tiptoed through Pittsburgh’s defensive third and fired a left-to-right shot that beat starting goalkeeper Danny Waltman, who was otherwise sharp in net.  Most of the first half was played in the Riverhounds’ end as Harrisburg, for the second week in succession, forced its muscle on Pittsburgh.  The first half ended with 17 fouls.

The skies opened up just before half, and the sides played in a hard and steady downpour for 50 of the 90 minutes in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division showdown of the leagues’ two Keystone State members.

More yellow cards were given out -- one for Harrisburg’s Mo Odour in the in the 44th minute and another for Jason Kutney in the 53rd minute. Islanders forward Brandon Swartzendruber was also issued a yellow card for his foul on Ed Hayden in the 66th minute.

The Riverhounds had chances from Kutney, Evans, and Joe Zewe, but their shots did not go in.  The Riverhounds had a shot hit the post in the 88th minute before the game ended.

The Hounds also dropped a 3-0 loss at the Islanders’ home pitch, the Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg last week.  Harrisburg picked up right where it left off in the return match at Chartiers Valley Stadium in Pittsburgh, getting the only goal of the match just before the rains came.  Though scoring only once, Harrisburg’s attack kept the Riverhounds on their heels all night with hearty offensive pressure.

Pittsburgh fell to 1-2-2 (5-points) while Harrisburg improved to 3-1-1 (10-points).  The Hounds play back-to-back road games at Charlotte and Wilmington on May 29th and 30th.  They have a break this week, but will be training hard to prepare for those two matches.

Ruffneck Soccer Scarves owner Jeff McIntyre presented Riverhounds’ midfielder Jason Kutney with the 2008 Player of the Year Award before the start of the game.  The Riverhounds played in front of a crowd of 920 fans.
