The Riverhounds traveled to Deer Lakes High School to play against Slippery Rock University. The past two years the squads have met at Deer Lakes to help raise money for local charitable contributions. This year all proceeds raised during the match were donated to the “Wounded Warrior Project”, the event raised over $1,000.
The match began with a calming aura amongst the Hounds, with a focus on maintaining possession of the ball from the opening whistle. The Riverhounds quickly took the lead over the Rock in the 7th minute when second year Riverhound, Tommy Gray, broke free down the left flank and served an early cross into the box. His service found Jeremy Deighton diving through the Rock’s defense to head Gray’s cross into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Eight minutes later, Gray served another beautiful ball to the back post to link up with Chad Severs, who was waiting for an easy finish with his header.
In the 25th minute, Tony Labudovski played a deep penetrating pass into Deighton’s feet on the 6-yard line left of the goal. Deighton’s composure on top of the ball allowed him to turn to his left and slot a pass back for Severs who one-timed the pass into the open goal.
The fourth Riverhound goal began with rookie, Matt Baker attacking down the left side with Gray overlapping, Baker cut inside of his defender and played a slotted ball into the corner. Gray played a one-timed pass into the box to connect with Deighton’s head for the second time in the match.
The second half was played primarily in the middle third of the field seeing the Hounds change the point of attack with hopes of creating numbers up situations. In the 75th minute Kolby LaCrone’s individual effort saw him beat two Rock defenders on top of the box and strike a left-footed shot past the diving goal keeper.
In the 90th minute rookie, Adam Gazda finished the match with style, taking a set piece on the left side of the goal from 25 yards out. His right-footed shot bent over the wall into the upper corner to wrap up the Hounds scoring and end the match 6 nil.
The Riverhounds end their Pre-Season tomorrow with a match against California University of Pennsylvania. The match is slated for a 7:00 PM kick-off at California’s stadium.
