Hounds Set For Season Opener

Pittsburgh, PA - Led by new Head Coach Justin Evans and an exciting mix of youth and veterans, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds enter their third season in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division with high hopes.

The Riverhounds ownership group of David Wilke, Jay Hill and David Binder made strategic changes during the off-season, the most notable being the appointment of Evans. With 10 years of professional experience at every level in the United States, Evans has hung up his boots to focus his attention on implementing his knowledge of the game from the sideline. His vast playing experience allows him to understand the rigorous demands the professional season has on both the team and the individual.

“From top to bottom, the players that have signed for the upcoming season have created an extremely competitive environment in our training sessions, which have allowed us to focus on the critical tactics of the game,” Evans said. “I am determined to produce a winning squad for Pittsburgh.”

Evans’ first order of business has been to change the dynamics of the players who wear the Riverhounds kit in 2010, building around proven veterans while developing young players into the professional ranks.

Returning Riverhounds

USL-2 Top 15 of the Decade selection Nathan Salsi returns to the Hounds for his sixth season as a central defender. Joining Salsi in the back are third-year Riverhound Ed Hayden and second-year player Nikola Katic. In the midfield, Evans brings back Jason Kutney for his fourth season with the Hounds, and he’ll play alongside second-year players Tommy Gray, Tony Labudovski and Pittsburgh native Travis MacKenzie.

Veteran Acquisitions

Forward Chad Severs, the first player signed by Evans in the off-season, will lead the attack for the Hounds. Hunter Gilstrap, a 2008 USL-2 Champion, will anchor the defense in goal.  Midfielder Shintaro Harada will solidify the middle of the park with his tireless engine and composure on the ball, while utility player Louie Rolko rounds out the off-season acquisitions.
