USL-2 Team of the Week
Tuesday, July 27, 2010
United Soccer Leagues announced the USL Second Division Team of the Week today, naming Chad Severs of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds as Player of the Week. Severs scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win against Charlotte last Friday. Severs buried the ball in the net in the 90th minute to secure a huge win for the Riverhounds, moving them into the third and final USL-2 playoff spot.
Aiding Severs’ cause in the victory was defender Jason Kutney, who anchored the Riverhounds’ defense in the win. Kutney and the Riverhounds will look to hold their playoff position this weekend against Real Maryland.
Following Pittsburgh’s big win Friday they suffered a setback against Richmond the next night. Bobby Foglesong of the Kickers scored the game winner in the 1-0 win and Mike Burke assisted on the goal.
The league-leading Charleston Battery powered their way to another win this past weekend against Harrisburg. Tom Heinemann led the attack, scoring the game winner and assisting on another in a 3-2 win. Midfielder Alioune Gueye also played a superb match, controlling the game both ways. In the back, defender Josh Bolton put in a solid defensive effort against Harrisburg and kept a clean sheet against Real Maryland Sunday.
Real Maryland had a standout defensive match as well. Gareth Evans anchored the backline in the scoreless draw. Keeper Brian Levey backstopped the defense, holding the powerful Charleston attack at bay.
Defender Jeritt Thayer of Harrisburg had a fantastic match, scoring two goals and carrying the City Islander s’ offense against Charleston.
Charlotte’s Jorge Herrera had a superb offensive match as well, scoring the game-tying goal against Pittsburgh Friday night.
