Richmond, VA - Assistant Coach John Rotz was unable to travel to Richmond with the Riverhounds team due to personal matters. With Coach Rotz and his family in the players thoughts, Head Coach Justin Evans ensured the team was mentally prepared for a big test against defending USL-2 Champions, Richmond Kickers. That mental preparation worked, as the Riverhounds exploded to a 3-1 victory over the Kickers on a warm Saturday night at the University of Richmond stadium.
The Hounds were strong in possession from the opening whistle, maintaining a balanced attack and seeing several nice crosses off the foot of outside midfielder, Matt Baker. Baker then helped put the team in front, when he was pulled down in the box, gaining a Penalty Kick in the 37th minute. Chad Severs stepped up to the spot and confidently converted.
With a 1-0 lead at the half, the Hounds expected and planned for a stronger offensive from the Kickers in the second half. However, with their previous games in mind, the Hounds knew they would have to maintain their own attack rather than sitting in to defend. This proved effective, with a nice team effort to continue pressing the Kickers.
As the half pressed into the final 30 minutes, the Riverhounds found the back of the net again. With a ball played into Chad Severs at the top of the box, Severs did well to roll off the defenders shoulder and get in with the keeper. Sliding the ball over to the far post, Hounds forward Lee Kouadio-Tobey accellerated onto the loose ball and buried it.
Immediately, the Kickers responded with a strong attack. Having the composure of a veteran team, Richmond moved up the field, found their target men inside the box and capitalized. On a ball into the feet of Sasha Gorres, Gorres turned and unloaded on a point-blank shot that Riverhounds goalie Hunter Gilstrap was able to deflect on a kick-save. Unfortunately for Gilstrap and the Hounds, the deflection ended on the foot of USL leading scorer, Matthew Delicate. "Deli" easily closed the Hounds lead to 2-1 with a nice finish.
Continuing to press and battle, the two teams went back and forth for a few minutes before the Riverhounds would finally apply the icing. Midfielder Tommy Gray, receiving the ball just inside their offensive half, took a touch and saw the opportunity to hit a long-range shot. Firing a rocket, Richmond Goalkeeper Mark Murphy was unable to deal with the shot, mishandling it into his own net, with just a few minutes left on the clock.
The Riverhounds will next prepare for a battle in Maryland next Sunday, as they take on the Real Maryland Monarchs.
