PITTSBURGH (July 31, 2026) — For the first time this season, the Hounds head to the West Coast where they will square off with an Oakland Roots side battling to get back on the right side of the playoff line.
Both teams are aiming for a bounce-back coming off consecutive defeats. The Hounds came up short by 1-0 scores in each of their past two matches against Rhode Island and Tulsa, while the Roots have dropped four straight overall, including their USL Cup finale.
For the Hounds, it will be their second trip to the historic Oakland Coliseum after taking a 2-0 victory there last season — making it the first venue where the Pittsburgh trifecta of the Steelers, Pirates and Hounds all have won games. In fact, the Hounds are unbeaten in four meetings with the Roots with three victories and scoreless draw on their first-ever trip to Oakland.
On the back end of a three-match week, the Hounds will be able to rotate some players back into the lineup. Albert Dikwa and Eliot Goldthorp both provided a spark off the bench against Tulsa, while Lasse Kelp made a late appearance and Victor Souza got the day off, highlighting a few of the regular starters who had a lighter workload Wednesday. Hounds fans also go their first look Wednesday at newcomer Yu Tsukanome, who was able to get involved quickly against Tulsa.
For Oakland, scoring goals has not been an issue, and 2025 Golden Boot winner Peter Wilson is still the main man on the attack with 10 goals to lead the Roots. Wolfgang Prentice occupies the playmaker role in the Roots setup with five goals and a team-leading six assists, and they have plenty of other familiar attacking options in longtime league veterans Florian Valot and Danny Trejo, along with former Hounds forward Bertin Jacquesson, who signed with the Roots after last season’s championship triumph. The defensive third is where the Roots have had their issues, though, as their 27 goals allowed in league play is tied for the fourth-worst total in the Championship and tied for the most allowed in the Western Conference.
