PITTSBURGH (Oct. 28, 2026) — The last two Eastern Conference clubs to claim the USL Championship title reconnect to kick off the first round of this year’s playoffs when the defending champion Hounds visit Louisville City FC on Friday night in Kentucky.
The fifth-seeded Hounds will aim to recreate their playoff run of a season ago, when they became the first team to run through the entire playoffs without conceding a goal. But to do that this year, they will have to begin the run away from home and against a team that has had the upper hand on the Hounds in playoff matches.
Louisville has eliminated the Hounds in three previous playoff meetings, the most recent coming in 2022 when they survived on penalties as the top seed after a 2-2 draw. Only Robbie Mertz, Danny Griffin and Albert Dikwa remain with the Hounds from that match, however, and fourth-seeded Louisville will come into the match with the weight of being eliminated at home in each of the past two seasons in the conference semifinal and conference quarterfinal rounds, respectively.
The Hounds swept the season series with Louisville for the first time ever this year. Nico Campuzano turned in an eight-save, Player of the Week performance in goal to back the Hounds to a 2-0 win in Louisville on May 9, and then Trevor Amann earned the league’s top honor after his record-setting fastest hat trick in a 3-1 win on July 18 in Pittsburgh. The win in Louisville was the third time the Hounds have come away from Lynn Family Stadium with a victory and the sixth time they have won in Louisville overall, both the most of any visiting club. The Hounds are 6-3-4 all-time in Louisville in a series where the road team has emerged with a victory in 14 of 26 overall meetings.
The hosts have been a high-scoring set this year with 51 goals — fourth in the league — and their scoring has been balanced with eight goals apiece from Ray Serrano and Jansen Wilson along with seven from Chris Donovan. Uncharacteristically from years past, Louisville has been vulnerable on the back end with 43 goals allowed, more than any other playoff team except the two No. 8 seeds, Miami (49) and Phoenix (46).
The winner of the quarterfinal match will advance to face the winner between the top-seeded Tampa Bay Rowdies and Miami FC, another Friday match that will begin an hour after the Hounds-Louisville contest.
Friday’s match will air live locally on SportsNet Pittsburgh with replays throughout the weekend on SNP and SNP+. ESPN+ will have the live stream of the match, and Spanish radio coverage will be carried by our partners at Radio Las Palmas, 92.9 FM HD2.
