PITTSBURGH (Sept. 17, 2026) — The chance to secure a ninth consecutive playoff berth and a shot to defend the USL Championship title is on the table, but making it official this weekend will require grabbing a win in one of the league’s toughest road environments at Detroit City FC.
The Hounds have never won at Keyworth Stadium, but on the flip side, they have only lost once there, that coming by a 1-0 score in a USL Cup match last season. All four regular-season meetings in Michigan have ended as draws, the last three of the scoreless variety, showing how tightly played matches between the two sides have been.
The playoff scenario has many steps for the Hounds, but having a clinching possibility in September remains an enviable position. With a win, the Hounds would clinch a postseason berth if all of Miami (at Rhode Island), Loudoun (at Louisville) and Birmingham (at Tampa Bay) drop points, and it is a very plausible scenario given that all three of those teams are road underdogs. Apart from simply clinching, the match has major implications on home field in the playoffs, as the third-place Hounds would like to create separation from a fourth-place Detroit side that still holds two matches in hand.
Sam Bassett has had the hot boot for the Hounds of late with three goals in his last five matches, including the lone tally in the team’s 1-0 win last Saturday over Loudoun. Charles Ahl, who set up the goal, now has six chances created over the past three matches and shares the team lead in assists with Perrin Barnes at four. And the Hounds continue to stay on an upward trajectory defensively with five clean sheets in the past eight matches, which has propelled Nico Campuzano to one off the Championship lead with nine shutouts in league play.
Detroit’s attack remains centered through striker Darren Smith, who has scored 12 of the team’s 28 goals in league play. Le Rouge also boasts the best defensive record in the league with only 19 goals through 23 matches, which has goalkeeper Carlos Herrera postitioned as the Golden Glove leader and league co-leader with 10 shutouts. Detroit has only given up two goals in its past six games — though one was in a 1-0 loss at Sacramento last Saturday — which means all the signs are pointing to another defensive battle in a series that only once has seen more than two goals scored in a match in 12 all-time meetings, that coming in the Hounds’ 2-1 win at home earlier this season.
