Ydrach called in for Argentina clash

PITTSBURGH (Oct. 10, 2025) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC center back Beto Ydrach has been called into the Puerto Rico National Team squad for their match against Argentina on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The friendly, which pits El Huracán Azul against the reigning FIFA World Cup champions, will be played at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the home field of MLS team Inter Miami CF. It is Puerto Rico’s only match in this month’s international window and the second for Argentina, which is also scheduled to to face Venezuela tonight in Miami.

Ydrach will travel to join the national team Sunday and will rejoin the Hounds prior to their match at Monterey Bay FC. The first-year pro has 16 international appearances to his name and most recently appeared for Puerto Rico in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers back in June.

PITTSBURGH (Oct. 9, 2025) — It’s a win-and-in situation for the Hounds when they return home to host Indy Eleven at Highmark Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite last week’s setback in Miami, the Hounds remain in sixth place in a jam-packed Eastern Conference. With three matches left to play, the possibility of outcomes range from third place and a home match to start the playoffs to missing out completely, which is why the players have said they need to be “locked in” for playoff intensity for every match the rest of the way.

Charles Ahl scored the opening goal in the loss at Miami, netting his fourth goal in his first professional season. Since 2011, only three other first-year pros have scored more goals for the Hounds: Robbie Mertz with seven in 2019, Tommy Williamson with six in 2021 and Tola Showunmi with five in 2023. Between Ahl finding his scoring boots of late and Augi Williams having a chance to damage the playoff hopes of his former team, the Hounds will be hunting goals on their home turf against an Indy side that has given up 47 goals, tied for the second-most in the USL Championship.

On the opposite end of the field, the Hounds will be motivated to correct what went wrong in allowing three goals to Miami. That match ended the Hounds’ streak of 63 consecutive matches against USL opponents without allowing three, dating back to the third match of the 2024 season. Despite that, the Hounds have given up only 27 goals in 27 matches, giving them a chance to average under 1.00 goal per game allowed for the third consecutive season and what would be the sixth time in eight seasons under Bob Lilley.

From Indy’s standpoint, the match is one they need to get something from, as they enter the weekend trailing Rhode Island FC by two points for the final playoff spot in the East. While the defensive record is spotty, the Eleven have speed to burn and players capable of finding the net, led by Jack Blake with 10 goals, Romario Williams with eight and Elvis Amoh with five of the team’s 40 on the year.

Saturday’s match will be the final Fireworks Frenzy night of the season at Highmark Stadium, with a post-match fireworks show to go with the on-field autograph session after the final whistle. We also start October by celebrating our annual “Kick Out Cancer Night,” as we have special in-match activities and recognitions to salute cancer survivors and honor the people from our region leading the way in cancer research and treatment.

The final month of the regular season also brings back some greatest hits to the food and beverage stands, including the Beer Cheese & Bacon Burger, served on a pretzel bun, from the train grill on the East End. Loaded Pierogis will still be available this month from the Nacho Junction stand on the West End, the same side of the stadium where fans can find Caramel Apple Funnel Cake to enjoy.

The match will air live on KDKA+ with a Sunday re-airing at 1 p.m., and ESPN+ is the place to go for the live stream online. Radio Las Palmas, 92.9 FM HD2 will have the live radio broadcast in Spanish, available both over the air and online.

Time to get ‘locked in’ with playoff chase looming

The USL Championship Playoffs don’t officially begin until the weekend of Oct. 31, but to ask the Hounds, their sense is that every match the rest of the way has a postseason feel.

With three matches to play, beginning with Saturday’s home contest against Indy Eleven, the Hounds have everything to play for, from securing their eighth consecutive postseason berth to the chance of making a late push for a home playoff match.

The stakes aren’t lost on the Hounds, who would make their playoff status official with a win over Indy.

“I wouldn’t say there’s more pressure on us right now, but we know we let an opportunity slip in Miami. We have to move past that and get ready for Indy this weekend,” center back Sean Suber said. “We’re going to attack training hard and go out and try to clinch playoffs this weekend. But also, we’re trying to get a top-four spot, so we think every game is win-or-go-home, trying to get into that playoff mode.”

The team’s 3-1 setback in Miami proved to be a missed opportunity to move upward with both Loudoun and North Carolina losing on the weekend. But the weekend as a whole showed there will be no easy points in the final month of the season, as wins were claimed by each of the bottom four teams in the Eastern Conference entering the weekend: Rhode Island, Tampa Bay, Birmingham and Miami.

For the Hounds, the biggest thing is taking the lessons from Miami and correcting errors for the most important time of the season.

“You look back on the (Miami) game, but you don’t want to look back on that one too long. There’s a lot we could have taken from that first half, a lot of good things minus not finishing the chances. … And then not a lot to take from the second half,” midfielder and captain Danny Griffin said. “Talking to the guys, we know to reset, we know to refocus, and now the focus is Indy. We know they’re a good team, but we’re at home, we’ll have the fans behind us, and we’ve got to take the three points.”

Griffin’s comments underline the biggest change the team hopes to make. While small tweaks to execution of tactics and finishing in front of net are items on the agenda, the largest issue in the minds of the Hounds is turning dominant stretches of play — such as their first half in Miami, when they outshot the hosts 15-1 — into 90-minute-long matches on the front foot.

“We have to stay locked in the whole time,” Suber said. “We had a great first half in Miami, and whether we thought it was going to be easy in the second half or what, they had a good first 10 minutes and scored the goal. Then momentum completely shifts, we’re away from home, and we’ve got to respond better after their goal, and even in the second half coming out.”

Suber went on to highlight other matches where the Hounds have let points slip from a winning position, which has been the case in three of their past four defeats: home vs. Charleston, at Tampa Bay, and now, at Miami.

The Hounds can take heart in knowing that they have shown the ability to go toe-to-toe with any team in the Championship, even presumptive Players’ Shield winners Louisville in a 0-0 draw earlier this season in Kentucky. And the players who were on the team last year know full well what a late winning streak can do after the club won its final four matches of 2024 to jump from 10th to seventh and make the playoffs.

Now, with nine points available and the margin for error slim — the Hounds are four points out of third place but also only five points clear of the playoff cutoff — there’s a playoff feel even before the actual playoffs begin.

“A lot of guys who were here before have experience in those types of environments, and for sure, that helps,” Griffin said. “Pretty much every game here on out, you’re getting every team’s best effort. Teams are fighting to keep a playoff spot or fighting to get a home game, so you’re not going to get an easy match, regardless.”

“We still feel like we have a higher ceiling than we’ve put together all year,” Suber said. “If we can make those strides in these final three games and hit the ceiling we think we can hit, then we’ll be able to have a good run in the playoffs and try to bring some silverware home to the club.”

Miami stifles Hounds with second-half flurry

(Oct. 4, 2025) — Things began brightly for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, but a second-half flurry by Miami FC sent the Hounds to a 3-1 defeat tonight at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.

Florida native Charles Ahl opened the scoring for the Hounds (10-10-7) with a top-notch volley that sent the team to the halftime break in the lead. But Tobias Zárate scored twice after the break, and substitute Allen Gavilanes added a late goal to help Miami (6-15-6) stave off elimination in the playoff chase.

The Hounds’ first loss to Miami in their past nine meetings leaves the team in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, missing out on an opportunity to leap to fourth with a win.

First half

The Hounds were dominant in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the hosts by a 15-1 margin and keeping play largely in the Miami half. Ahl was at the center of that, recording five shots in the match, including a 10th-minute effort from the top of the box that went just over the crossbar.

Ahl got his goal in the 22nd minute on a play that began with his own free kick hitting the Miami wall. The Hounds cycled the ball to the right, where Luke Biasi crossed, and the Miami defense could only get a glancing header away. Ahl was in a perfect position on the opposite side, and he hit a confident right-footed volley to turn the ball into the far side of the net.

It was the fourth goal of the season for Ahl, the most among the Hounds’ first-year pros, and three of his four goals have come against Florida teams — Miami twice and the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

The Hounds could have doubled the lead in the 33rd minute when Bradley Sample put a deft touch on a bouncing ball to create space in the box. Sample fired toward goal, but his shot struck the left upright and stayed in play.

Biasi finished the half with a good chance bolting into the right side of the box, but his hard shot was palmed away by one of five saves by Miami goalkeeper Nicolás Cardona.

Second half

As good as the Hounds were in the first half, Miami turned the tables, and it began quickly.

Zárate got between defenders and onto the end of a ball lofted into the right side of the box before cutting back onto his left foot. He fired quickly, and his low shot had enough pace to beat Hounds goalkeeper Jacob Randolph in the 48th minute.

Zárate got his second in the 59th minute after Miami’s Cristian Vázquez was able to block a Hounds clearance. Francisco Bonfiglio was first to the loose ball and played it back to Vázquez, who passed to the late-arrive Zárate for a finish into the top left corner of the net.

Miami added its insurance goal in the 82nd minute with a skillful finish by Gavilanes, who received an arcing diagonal ball from Gerald Diaz on the left side of the box. Gavilanes took one touch to control, and his second touch was a low finish with his left foot back across the goal.

It was the first time the Hounds have conceded three goals to a USL opponent since March 23, 2024 against Louisville City FC, a span of 63 matches in all competitions against USL clubs.

Man of the Match

Charles Ahl was a bright spot playing back in his home state, where he produced an excellent opening goal. The first-year pro was active all night in the attack with five total shots — three on goal — three free kicks won, four crosses and a chance created.

The Hounds are back at home at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, when they will host an Indy Eleven side still hovering near the playoff line in the Eastern Conference. Indy (9-13-5) is holding on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, despite falling Saturday to Louisville, 2-0.

(Oct. 2, 2025) — The final month of the regular season has arrived, and the Hounds have a chance to make another late-year march up the standings when they visit Miami FC on Saturday night.

The Hounds cannot clinch a playoff spot on their own Saturday, but a win coupled with a Rhode Island FC loss on Sunday would ensure the Hounds qualify for the postseason for a team-best eighth consecutive year. Add in that a win, coupled with other favorable results, could see the team leap into the Eastern Conference’s top four, and there’s plenty of reason for the Hounds to be switched on against a Miami team that has struggled over the past two months.

Augi Williams netted the only goal from the penalty spot in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Las Vegas, and the Hounds now have the chance to win three consecutive USL Championship matches for the first time in 2025 — their lone previous three-match wins streak included a Jägermeister Cup triumph.

As for Williams, he has a team-leading eight goals, putting him two away from a fifth career double-digit goal season. That would also mean the Hounds have had at least one 10-goal player in 10 straight full seasons (excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign), a streak that began with current assistant coach Rob Vincent in 2015.

The Hounds are getting healthier after the return of Jackson Walti in a substitute role last match, leaving only Perrin Barnes (ankle) on the shelf beside Aidan O’Toole, whose rehab from season-ending knee surgery is progressing well.

Miami, meanwhile, has gone more than three months since its last victory back in June over the front-running Charleston Battery. But that drought doesn’t mean the hosts have been easy beats.

Miami’s last four matches have been a trio of 1-0 losses, with a scoreless draw with Las Vegas sandwiched in the middle, and the Hounds were fortunate to salvage a draw in the teams’ first meeting, when Charles Ahl scored late in a 1-1 draw July 29 in Pittsburgh. Couple that with the performance of Francisco Bonfiglio, who scored in the first match against the Hounds and is still tied for second in the Championship with 13 goals, and the Hounds will need to be on their guard in Florida.

The Hounds are hoping this October will be like the others since Bob Lilley took over before the 2018 season. In regular-season matches during October, the Hounds are 13-3-6 under Lilley, including the 4-0-0 finish last season that began with a Bertin Jacquesson hat trick-powered win in Miami.

Vacter lands spot on Team of the Week

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 30, 2025) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC defender Guillaume Vacter was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 30, the league announced this afternoon.

Vacter was instrumental in the Hounds’ defensive effort in a 1-0 shutout victory Sunday night against Las Vegas Lights FC. The center back won nine duels, recovered possession three times and won all three tackles contested. He also totaled six clearances and finished with a team-leading four chances created, making an impact on both ends of the field.

It is the third Team of the Week selection this season — the most on the Hounds in 2025 — for Vacter, a first-year pro from Paris by way of the University of Connecticut. To see the full Team of the Week, visit uslchampionship.com.

Augi on the spot fires Hounds past Vegas

PITTSBURGH (Sept 28, 2025) — Augi Wiliams converted from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, and that would prove to be the only goal as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds won for the second straight match, defeating Las Vegas Lights FC tonight at Highmark Stadium, 1-0.

Goalkeeper Jacob Randolph made four saves to record his third shutout in six matches across all competitions — and his first in USL Championship play — this season for the Hounds (10-9-7).

The match was originally scheduled to be played last night, but it was moved by the USL after Las Vegas (6-13-7) had its travel plans unexpectedly disrupted, preventing the Lights from arriving until late Saturday.

First half

Both teams made quick attempts to get around the defense and create from the goal line. The Lights’ Patrick Leal got a dangerous ball into the Hounds box that was cleared from the front of goal by Guillaume Vacter minutes into the match, and shortly afterward, Junior Etou combined with Robbie Mertz to get to the end line, but his low cross was smothered by Lights goalie Raiko Arozarena.

That early move by Etou signaled what was to come, as Mertz played him through again in the 28th minute. The Hounds wing back cut toward the goal before being tripped by the sliding challenge of Younes Boudadi, causing referee Amin Hadzic to point immediately to the spot.

Williams stepped up to convert the penalty kick on the half-hour mark, scoring to the bottom right corner past the dive of Arozarena. It is the team-leading eighth goal of the season for Williams, who is a perfect 3-for-3 from the penalty mark with the Hounds.

Randolph was largely untested in the first half, but he did make his first save in the 37th minute to catch a curling effort by Lights leading scorer Johnny Rodriguez.

Second half

The Hounds could have doubled their lead five minutes after the break when Luke Biasi picked out a pass to hit Bradley Sample arriving late into the penalty area. Sample had time to take a settling touch before firing a shot that struck the crossbar squarely and bounced back into play.

Traffic continued moving mostly in the Hounds direction — the team outshot Las Vegas by a 19-6 margin — but the Lights did put three more shots on goal, including a free kick by Gennaro Nigro that Randolph caught cleanly in the 68th minute.

Randolph’s best save came in the 81st minute, when he got low again to deny and hold a shot through some traffic by Giorgio Probo. Minutes later, the Hounds had another great chance go wanting, as Chase Boone’s flicked header to the back post fell to the feet of Vacter, whose volley attempt went over the bar.

In stoppage time, Arozarena came up with the biggest of his five saves to deny Brigham Larsen from getting his first Hounds goal. Las Vegas has one last chance when a long goal kick by Arozarena was flicked forward, but Rodriguez couldn’t find the target as he tried to chip Randolph with the ball bouncing in front of him.

Modelo Man of the Match

Junior Etou was everywhere along the left side during his 80 minutes on the pitch. The wing back won the penalty kick that was the game’s only goal, totaling four touches in the Las Vegas box, six clearances defensively and winning 9 of 12 duels overall.

What’s next?

On an unexpected short week, the Hounds now prepare to head south to face Miami FC at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Miami (5-15-6) has struggled through September with three 1-0 defeats in four matches, but they did draw 1-1 with the Hounds in their first meeting July 29 in Pittsburgh.

Las Vegas match postponed to Sunday

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 27, 2025) — Due to unexpected delays that prevented Las Vegas Lights FC’s travel, the Riverhounds’ match against Las Vegas Lights FC has been postponed by the USL Championship to Sunday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.

All tickets for Saturday’s match at Highmark Stadium will be honored for the new date. The Tailgate Zone will open at 4 p.m., and gates will open at 5 p.m. before the 6 p.m. kickoff. All scheduled promotions will be held, including Hispanic Heritage Night and $1 beers, now running from 4 p.m. until the 6 p.m kickoff.

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 25, 2025) — The Hounds have a chance to build momentum heading toward the playoffs and stay in the mix for a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference, but to do so, they’ll need to knock off a visiting Las Vegas Lights team that needs wins to stay in playoff contention in the West.

The contest will happen a day later than expected, as unforeseen travel issues for the Lights caused the match to be rescheduled by the league to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28.

After showing some mettle to complete the season sweep of Hartford with an 89th-minute winning goal by Chase Boone, his first as a Hounds player, the team finds itself in sixth place — but only four points adrift of third-place Loudoun United FC — with five matches to play. The Lights, on the other hand, trail the West’s eighth-place team, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, by six points, and they would love to still be in contention when they meet the Switchbacks on the season’s penultimate weekend.

Though the Hounds have yet to have a match with a major offensive outburst, the team has steadily found the net, having been shut out only once in its past 10 matches. With Boone’s late goal, seven different Hounds players have game-winning goals across all competitions. The Hartford match’s opening scorer, Charles Ahl, is not one of those, but his three goals on the year have come at opportune moments — two have been in the opening three minutes of matches and the other was second-half stoppage time.

Tops on the Hounds to-do list is to shore up their set-piece defending after yielding a corner kick goal to Hartford. It was the third time in four matches the team allowed a goal that began from a set piece, and the result has been the Hounds and goalkeeper Eric Dick having only one clean sheet in the past seven matches.

The Lights, on the other hand, have greatly struggled to find the net all season. Their 19 goals in league play is second-worst behind only Rhode Island FC’s 18, and they have not scored multiple goals in a match since a 2-2 draw on Aug. 16 with New Mexico United. Johnny Rodriguez has accounted for nearly half of their offensive output with eight goals and an assist, while goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena does have 10 clean sheets on the season, second-best in the Championship.

A festive atmosphere is expected at the match for Hispanic Heritage Night at Highmark Stadium, which will be loaded with in-match activations, including the final 2025 appearance of the pre-match $1 Beers special. From 4-6 p.m., fans can get $1 IC Light in the Tailgate Zone and inside the stadium after gates open at 6 p.m.

Radio Las Palmas, the Hounds’ Spanish-language radio broadcast partner, will have a DJ in the Tailgate Zone before the match, and their on-air personalities will deliver announcements and help introduce the teams in Spanish. Las Palmas Supermercados will also have their regular food stand in the Tailgate Zone, serving up tacos and other Hispanic dishes, while inside the stadium, the Corona Cantina will be serving up margaritas to drink and churros to snack on during the match.

Suber sets defensive record in win

While the 89th-minute winner scored by Chase Boone and the finish of the Hounds’ win last Saturday at Hartford Athletic grabbed the most attention, what flew under the radar was a team record being set early in the match.

Sean Suber, who has played every minute in USL Championship play in 2025, recorded 11 clearances in the match to bring his season total to 164, the most in a single league season by any Hounds player on record. That eclipses the previous mark of 162 set in the 2018 season by Joe Greenspan.

Clearances only go back as an official statistic for nine years, to the 2017 season, which was the first year Opta provided stats tracking for the USL. But considering the longer league schedule compared to the club’s earlier years, coupled with the fact Suber accumulated his current total in only 25 matches — compare that to Greenspan, who played 32 matches in 2018 — and it’s likely his mark is at or near the top spanning all seasons.

A second-year Hounds center back and third-year pro, Suber has been the man marshaling the back line all season for the Hounds in the middle of the team’s usual back three. Having played every minute in USL Championship play this season, both Suber and goalkeeper Eric Dick are on pace to become the first players to play every minute of a league season for the Hounds since Thomas Vancaeyezeele did so in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The last Hounds player to do so in a “full” season was Andrew Marshall, who played every minute of all 26 matches in 2013.
