PITTSBURGH (March 13, 2023) — The United States Soccer Federation announced this afternoon that Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC has advanced to the Third Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as a result of a forfeit by Rochester New York FC of MLS Next Pro.
The decision comes after it was announced last Friday that Rochester NY FC — formerly the Rochester Rhinos — had ceased operations and would not be fielding a team in MLS Next Pro’s 2023 season. The USSF will record the match, which was scheduled for April 5, as a 1-0 victory by forfeit for the Hounds.
As a result, the Hounds will be one of the 48 teams whose name is called April 6 during the Third Round draw, when 18 teams from MLS and 30 winners from the Second Round are paired for matches to be played April 25-26. This is the fourth consecutive Open Cup that the Hounds have advanced to at least the Third Round of play.
Fans who had purchased tickets for the Second Round match will be refunded through the same method used to make the purchase.
