PITTSBURGH (April 29, 2017) – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-3-2) used a second-half tally by Corey Hertzog to snag their first home win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders (2-2-1) in round one of the Keystone Derby Cup, presented by K&L Gates and the Pennsylvania Lottery.
Taking advantage of a short-handed Harrisburg squad that saw Abass Mohammed sent off in the 52nd minute for two cautions, the Hounds picked up the lone tally in the 75th minute via a Hertzog header.
Action opened at a frenetic pace for the home side, with Hertzog and Kevin Kerr nearly connecting on early chances in the first 10 minutes of the match. Although, the score would remain deadlocked at 0-0 with the Hounds outshooting Harrisburg 8-3 in the first half, but seeing only two of those shots reach goal.
In the second half, the match took a major turn in the 52nd minute after Mohammed committed a hard foul on Hertzog from the right side of the box. Already issued a yellow card in the 40th minute of the first half, Mohammed was sent off and left the City Islanders with 10 men for the remainder of play.
Harrisburg would surprisingly hold serve and get the better of possession for much of the next 20 minutes of action, forcing goalkeeper Trey Mitchell to make a couple impressive plays to keep the score level.
Pittsburgh eventually broke through after a solid bout of possession in its offensive third.
In the 75th minute, Kerr collected the ball a little more than 25 yards out and sent a beautiful cross into Hertzog. The Hounds leading scorer wasted no time putting the ball on goal, leaping over the Harrisburg defense to pocket a header in the right side of the net.
The 1-0 lead would hold for the remainder of the game, as the Hounds improved to 1-2-1 at home. For Hertzog, the tally was his fourth of the season and 17th all-time with club, while he also broke a three-game goalless streak. Additionally, the victory was the first shutout of the season for Pittsburgh and the first clean sheet for Mitchell in his professional career.
The Hounds face a quick turnaround, as they next welcome Toronto FC II (1-2-3) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3. Tickets to the match are still available and can be purchased at www.riverhounds.com.

Dave Brandt
On Kevin Kerr and Corey Hertzog…
“Good combination – they were dangerous early in the first half as well and it’s a shame they couldn’t get one then.”
On the second half…
“I feel like that’s a tough half to play because I did think we dominated in the first half. I think that was obvious. Our guys know it. You go into the locker room at halftime and it was difficult to shove aside the feeling of ‘hey, this is going well, we’re doing well, just keep it up.’”
On playing after the Harrisburg red card…
“I don’t think we adjusted really, really quickly, but I do think our guys steadily kept their foot on the pedal in the way that we do things.”
Kevin Kerr
On earning the victory…
“Our performance hasn’t been bad, we just haven’t been able to win. Winning is a skill, itself. We had hard luck a bit, but we got three points tonight.”
On regrouping at halftime…
“We said at halftime it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just have to start winning games. Winning is a skill. It’s different than playing well, getting over the finish line and taking the three points.”
Corey Hertzog
On playing and receiving crosses from Kevin Kerr…
“Whenever Kevin gets the ball, I just try to be somewhere he can put it. I mean, he put it on top of my head twice in a row. Me and Kevin, I think, are very dangerous together.”
On adjusting while playing up a man…
“After the red card, it was a good 10 minutes where we’re trying to figure out what we need to do to just keep the ball. It changes the game a little bit. We’re up a man, we keep the ball, we be more patient. But we stuck to our game plan. We got crosses to the net. It’s a good win.
