PITTSBURGH (May 22, 2018) – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC continues its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run against FC Cincinnati at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Highmark Stadium.
The match pits the two familiar foes against each other for a second time this year, but for the first time ever in Open Cup play. In April, the two clubs played to a 2-2 draw at in front of 24,505 people at Nippert Stadium. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati will face each other again two more times during the USL regular season, both coming later in the season on Sept. 1 and Oct. 6.
Heading into tomorrow night’s action, Pittsburgh finds itself in the Third Round for the first time since 2015 thanks to a 2-1 victory over the NPSL’s Erie Commodores FC. Cincinnati, meanwhile, earned its visit with a 4-1 win over Detroit City FC, also of the NPSL, which took extra time to decide.
A live stream of the match is expected to be available and can be found by visiting ussoccer.com. Additionally, updates will be available on the Hounds’ Twitter page at @RiverhoundsSC.
Know Thy Enemy
FC Cincinnati entered this season’s Open Cup with perhaps the highest expectations of any USL side. In only its second year of existence, Cincinnati made an impressive run to the Cup semifinals, including defeating MLS clubs Columbus Crew SC and Chicago Fire, before being defeated by New York Red Bulls. Now a season removed, Cincinnati has the looks of a threat for repeat success, currently sitting first in the USL Eastern Conference at 6-2-2 and winners of four of its last five games in league play.
Notables
- Wednesday night’s match presents an opportunity for Riverhounds SC to accomplish something it has only done three times in 19 seasons – reach the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Stumbling the past two seasons, the Hounds registered back-to-back Fourth Round appearances in 2014-15 with the only other occurrence happening all the way back in 2001.
- A positive result against FC Cincinnati also welcomes another unique challenge in the possibility of facing an MLS side, which would mark the sixth time in club history. The last time Pittsburgh faced MLS competition? 2015 – a 3-1 defeat in extra time to D.C. United.
- In what has been a welcomed development to the 2018 season, the Hounds have excelled on home turf, holding a 3-0-2 record so far this year. Adding to that, the club has yet to cede a goal. Open Cup history has also been kind, as the Hounds are 5-2 when playing at Highmark Stadium, but with the two losses coming in their last two matches on the Mon in 2015 and 2016.
- For the Hounds to advance on Wednesday, they’ll have to do something they have yet to do in franchise history – beat FC Cincinnati. Since joining the league in 2016, Cincy has been a thorn in the Black and Gold’s side, holding a 3-0-3 advantage. The matches of late have been competitive though with all six being decided by a goal or less.
- One note to keep in mind is this match will pit the East’s highest-scoring offense in Cincinnati (20 goals scored) against the league’s stingiest defense in Pittsburgh (five goals allowed). If the two cancel out, expect extra time or potentially penalty kicks to decide the result, where the Hounds have gone past 90 minutes seven times in club history (3-4) – the last time coming in 2015 against D.C. United.
