PITTSBURGH (October 3, 2018) – Riverhounds SC has announced the addition of Chevron Corporation as a sponsor for Riverhounds Sub In for Gym Class, an expanding school-based training program.
Through this partnership, four schools have been identified within a territory covering Fayette, Greene and Westmoreland counties, in which the program has launched this fall. The goal of the program is rooted in creating a sense of enjoyment for the game of soccer among young children, who have not been regularly exposed to it or who do not have the available resources to play in their communities.
“Chevron is pleased to partner with the Riverhounds to bring professional soccer coaching to hundreds of school children in Fayette, Greene and Westmoreland counties,” said Trip Oliver, Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Chevron. “Programs like this not only teach kids a fun, new sport, but also lessons about physical fitness that they can take with them throughout their lives.”
Riverhounds SC kicked off the program at Bobtown Elementary School in Southeastern Greene School District this Monday. Working with just less than 400 students over the course of the week, the program aims to introduce young students to a host of exercises focused upon balance, coordination and cardiovascular work rate, all of which are centered on a soccer-inspired curriculum.
“We are seeing so many young children smiling ear to ear and sweating coming out of each session,” Riverhounds SC Sporting Director Jason Kutney said. “Most of the students have never really been exposed to soccer so it’s fantastic to see how this Chevron sponsorship is infusing a soccer lifeline into new markets of children who clearly want to learn the game. Providing soccer balls and equipment to each school ensures it can continue forward, which is key.”
By way of financial support from Chevron, all costs associated with the programming are completely covered, including soccer equipment that will be left behind at all schools for future use and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC game tickets for students and faculty.
