PITTSBURGH (August 30, 2017) – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have received goalkeeper Alex Kapp on loan from Minnesota United FC of MLS.
MLS has entered into 2017 Standard USL Loan Agreement for Kapp. This agreement contains a right of recall for MLS, which enables Kapp to play for a USL club and a MLS club throughout the duration of the loan period (through end of 2017), subject to roster rules and compliance.
Head coach Dave Brandt said he expects Kapp, who was claimed off waivers by Minnesota on Aug. 8, to further bolster the goalkeeper position for the Hounds after losing both starter Trey Mitchell and backup Keasel Broome to season-ending injuries this month.
“Given our injury issues at the goalkeeper position, we’re very happy to have Alex in from Minnesota,” Brandt said. “He’s an excellent young keeper – very quick, athletic and also very tactically aware. We’re looking forward to working with him and grateful to Minnesota for sending him our way. “
Kapp, 22, was originally drafted by Atlanta United FC in the fourth round (68th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He competed collegiately at Boston College from 2012-15 and Creighton University as a graduate student in 2016.
With the Eagles, Kapp played, most notably, 1,435 of a possible 1,525 minutes his junior year and ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in saves per game (3.67). At Creighton, he earned Big East Goalkeeper of the Year honors and was selected to the NSCAA NCAA Division I All-American Third Team.
In total, Kapp, a native of Somers, New York, played in 62 collegiate matches, making more than 200 saves during his time in the ACC and Big East.
