PITTSBURGH (July 28, 2023) — The Hounds will be out to snap their first losing streak of the season Saturday, but nothing will come easy in a top-four Eastern Conference matchup against visiting Memphis 901 FC.
After falling at home for the first time all season Wednesday against Indy Eleven, the Hounds need a result to maintain the top spot in the conference. Memphis, meanwhile, is tied for playing the fewest games of any team in the league, but to make their games in hand count in the race for first, they will need to snap a five-match winless streak.
The Hounds are hoping to have some defensive reinforcements ready after conceding a season-high three goals in each of the past two games. Nate Dossantos returned to training in full this week for the first time since suffering an ankle injury June 24 in the win over San Diego, and Luke Biasi is also likely to factor into the lineup after being held out for a few matches. The fresh legs come at a good time facing the team’s third match in eight days, and the Hounds could have significant changes to the lineup that faced Indy only 72 hours earlier.
Avoiding slow starts has been the other big point of emphasis in recent weeks for coach Bob Lilley, as the Hounds have only scored first in two of their past eight matches. Not by coincidence, the team won both of those games while going 1-2-3 in the other six.
Memphis, meanwhile, has been a potent offensive team but has at times been porous along their back line. Despite having the fewest number of games played at 19, Memphis’ games have featured the most total goals of any USL Championship team with 67 (35 for, 32 against). Their attack does have a different look from the teams’ first meeting this season — a 3-1 Hounds win on March 18 — with Rodrigo da Costa, who was acquired in a swap of forwards with FC Tulsa, leading Memphis with seven goals and three assists this season.
The Hounds have been mostly successful against the 901 FC, winning four of five all-time meetings, but Memphis did win last year’s meeting in Pittsburgh, 2-0, for their only win in the series.
Saturday’s match will feature another $1 beer special until kickoff, as well as a special giveaway from our partners at the PA Lottery. The first 2,500 fans in attendance (ages 18 and older) will receive PA Lottery coupons when they enter Highmark Stadium.
The Tailgate Zone will open to all fans at 5 p.m. with a DJ playing music live for a special Emo Night, and gates to the stadium will open at 6 p.m. Halftime will feature the ZOOperstars performing their comedic show with entertainment for both kids and adults.
Tickets for the match are still available through Ticketmaster and at the Highmark Stadium Box Office. Pre-paid parking is recommended, as the West Lot at Highmark Stadium has been selling out for recent matches.
Fans will also have plenty of places to catch the action from home or on the road. The local home of the Riverhounds, Pittsburgh’s CW, will have the broadcast in-market, while ESPN+ will stream the game. The match will also be the nationally broadcast match on SiriusXM FC Channel 157, available on car radios or through the SiriusXM app.
