HARRISBURG, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2018) – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (15-4-11) clinched its third-ever Keystone Derby Cup, presented by K&L Gates and the Pennsylvania Lottery, with a 2-0 victory against Penn FC (9-14-8) on Wednesday at FNB Field.
In addition to retaining the Derby Cup for a second consecutive year, the Hounds also clinched playoff berth for the first time since the 2015 campaign. The goal that catapulted the Black and Gold into the postseason came off the left foot of Kay Banjo in the 38th minute. Andrew Lubahn later added an insurance goal in second-half stoppage time.
“We knew it wouldn’t be easy,” head coach Bob Lilley said. “They’re a good team. They created some good moments, but I thought overall our defending was good. I thought we created some dangerous moments on the road.”
How It Happened
After a 90-minute weather delay, the game started slow like the action on the wet pitch. But as both sides combined for seven total shots in the first half, the Hounds struck first in the 38th minute.
Near the edge of the penalty area, Christiano François sent a ball toward the goal line to the right of the net. Fellow attacking midfielder Ben Fitzpatrick made a sliding effort at the ball, having the sphere hit off his body and redirect by Penn FC goalkeeper Sean Lewis back in front of the goalmouth. Crashing the net, striker Kay Banjo cashed in on the loose ball to provide the Black and Gold with a 1-0 lead.
Penn FC’s lone shot on target in the first half came just five minutes after the Hounds sniffed the scoresheet. Taking a long shot from outside of the 18-yard box, midfielder Paolo Junior had his try collected by Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mike Kirk.
In the second half, Penn FC registered more shots on goal than Pittsburgh (3-2), but it was the Hounds that again found the back of the twine.
As the match entered stoppage time, Andrew Lubahn and Neco Brett worked the ball into the 18-yard box. Receiving the feed from Brett, second-half substitute Lubahn then beat Lewis with his left foot in the center of the penalty area to give Pittsburgh the 2-0 win.
On the defensive side, Kirk held down the goal for Pittsburgh’s league-leading 16th clean sheet of the season.
Man of the Match
Striker Kay Banjo shot home the game-winning goal in the 38th minute, in addition to posting one of the squad’s three shots on goal.
