Alex Dixon earns back-to-back Team of the Week honors

PITTSBURGH (August 3, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC forward Alex Dixon was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 15, the second consecutive week he has received the honor.

Dixon scored two second-half goals, including the eventual game winner, in the Hounds’ 3-1 win over Hartford Athletic on Saturday, which propelled the team into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.

Dixon also added a pair of key passes and a team-high six open play crosses before being substituted in the 85th minute, shortly after his go-ahead goal. Showing his versatility, Dixon played the first half of the match as a right wingback before being moved to a more advanced position after halftime and leading the Hounds comeback from a 1-0 deficit.

Dixon is the first Hounds player to be named to the Team of the Week three times in 2021, after earning the honor in weeks 6 and 14, as well.

The Hounds will be back in action Friday, Aug. 6, when they travel to face the Charleston Battery in a 7:30 p.m. match that will be streamed on ESPN+.

Forbes, Dixon double up with USL Team of the Week honors

PITTSBURGH (July 27, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC midfielder Kenardo Forbes and forward Alex Dixon both were selected to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 14, the league announced this afternoon.

Both players were instrumental in the Hounds’ attack in a 3-1 win at the New York Red Bulls II on Friday.

Forbes assisted the Hounds’ first two goals, and in the process, took outright possession of the Riverhounds’ club record for assists with 29 in his three-and-a-half seasons with the team. He also recorded six key passes against New York, while winning 3 of 4 tackles while playing a more offensive position during the match.

Dixon, meanwhile, scored the opening goal in the match and assisted the final tally to give the Hounds a two-goal lead. In addition to the scoring contribution, he won 7 of 11 duels for the ball and made 13 defensive recoveries in a strong two-way performance on the wing.

For both players, it is the second Team of the Week selection of the season — Dixon earned the nod as a midfielder in Week 6, and Forbes was picked to the midfield in Week 10.

Joining those two, midfielder Todd Wharton was chosen as a bench selection to the Team of the Week. It is the first league honor of the season for Wharton, who finished with eight tackles, seven interceptions and an 82 percent pass completion rate, all team bests.

The Hounds return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday, when they host Hartford Athletic in a key matchup between two of the top three team in the Atlantic Division. That game will be shown on 22 The Point and streamed on ESPN+.

Hounds introduce new Tailgate Zone prior to upcoming home games

PITTSBURGH (July 24, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC announces its new Tailgate Zone at Highmark Stadium, where fans will be able to gather before and at halftime of Hounds home matches to enjoy drinks, food and music as part of the match day festivities.

The Tailgate Zone will be located just outside of the Highmark Stadium West Gate for all remaining 2021 home matches, beginning with the team’s next match, Saturday, July 31 against Hartford Athletic. Music and entertainment will be provided by media partner Star 100.7 FM, and we are proud to have Fat Head’s, Heineken, Mighty Swell and Straub as beverage partners for the Tailgate Zone.

Beer offerings from our sponsors in the Tailgate Zone will include our Riverhounds Session Copper Amber Lager brewed locally by St. Marys, Pa.-based Straub. Other selections include Fat Head’s Sunshine Daydream IPA, Mighty Swell Cherry Lime Hard Seltzer, Heineken and Bud Light.

Food will be provided by a rotating group of Pittsburgh-owned and operated food trucks, beginning with Progression Bistro and The Sandwich Guy on July 31. A full list of local food vendors scheduled will be available soon on www.riverhounds.com, and the list will be subject to changes or additions.

The Tailgate Zone will be open to all ticketed fans from two hours before kickoff until match time, and it will remain open for service through the end of halftime.

Danny Griffin named to USL Championship Team of the Week

PITTSBURGH (July 20, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC midfielder Danny Griffin was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 13, the league announced this afternoon.

Griffin played a crucial role in the Hounds’ 1-0 shutout win over Loudoun United FC on Saturday, disrupting the Loudoun attack regularly from his central holding role. He won 4 of his 5 tackles in the match, made 15 recoveries and had six interceptions, all of which were team highs.

It is the second Team of the Week honor this season for Griffin, who holds the distinction of being the only Hounds player to have played every minute thus far in 2021 — 1,260 minutes in 14 matches. The second-year pro previously was on the Team of the Week in Week 6.

The Hounds return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, when they visit the New York Red Bulls II at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, N.J. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Hounds discontinuing Chick-fil-A promotion

PITTSBURGH (July 16, 2021) — After considering feedback, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will discontinue its planned promotion and sale of Chick-fil-A sandwiches at home games this season.

Riverhounds SC wishes to thank the local and independently operated McKnight Road Chick-fil-A for their collaboration, and the club will be selling Chick-fil-A sandwiches at the match Saturday against Loudoun United FC to honor our initial agreement. But after consulting with our supporters’ groups and gauging feedback from our fans, the decision was made not to continue the promotion beyond this week’s match.

The Hounds and Highmark Stadium strongly believe in making all of our fans feel welcome, and we look forward to doing so once again at tomorrow’s match. As an organization, we will continue to look for ways to partner with local and national brands to improve the game day experience for everyone.

Hounds, Chick-fil-A team up to offer chicken sandwiches at home games

PITTSBURGH (July 14, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC is pleased to announce the addition of Chick-fil-A sandwiches to the food offerings at Highmark Stadium on match days.

Working in conjunction with Chick-fil-A location on McKnight Road, Highmark Stadium will offer the chain’s classic Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich and Spicy Chicken Sandwiches as menu options while supplies last at each match.

“We are excited to collaborate with the McKnight Road Chick-fil-A, as we continue to build partnerships that will enhance all aspects of the fan experience on Hounds game days,” Riverhounds President Vic Gregovits said.

The Chick-fil-A menu items will be available beginning with the July 17 home match against Loudoun United FC, and they will be offered at all home matches except for those played on Sunday.

Hounds add defender Tom Judge on loan from Nashville SC

PITTSBURGH (July 6, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC has acquired defender Tom Judge on loan from MLS club Nashville SC, the team announced Tuesday.

Judge, 22, was Nashville’s second-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft in January. After being selected, the 6-foot-1 defender chose to remain at James Madison University for his senior season in the spring, where he was named a United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-American and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to college soccer’s top player.

“Tom is a versatile defender who has good pace and technical ability. We are grateful to the Nashville organization for trusting us with Tom, and we look forward to helping him develop during the 2021 USL season,” Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley said.

During his time at James Madison, Judge helped lead the Dukes to three consecutive Colonial Athletic Association titles and three straight NCAA Tournament berths, which included a run to the national quarterfinals in 2018.

A native of Freehold, N.J., Judge signed his first pro contract with Nashville on June 17 after completing his time at JMU. He has joined the Hounds in training this week and will be eligible for selection beginning with the Hounds’ next home match, July 17 against Loudoun United FC.

Jelani Peters poised for first international appearance at Gold Cup

PITTSBURGH  (July 1, 2021) — Riverhounds SC defender Jelani Peters was named to Trinidad & Tobago’s final roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which begins Friday with a 12-team qualifying tournament.

Peters, 27, will be in the mix for his first international appearance with the Soca Warriors, who begin the event facing Montserrat at 9:30 p.m. Friday at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The winner of that match will face the winner between Cuba and French Guiana on July 6, with the winner of that match advancing to the 16-team group stage of the Gold Cup.

It is the second time Peters has been called up to his national team, the first coming in November 2016, when he joined the squad for World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras. He was an unused substitute in those matches.

In his first year with the Hounds, Peters in on pace to have his most active season as a professional since that 2016-17 season, when he appeared in 22 matches for Trinidadian club W Connection before being loaned to Toronto FC II. This year, Peters has appeared in seven of the Hounds’ first 10 matches with five starts, as he has been a regular part of Bob Lilley‘s rotation at center back.

Two other Hounds players were included on preliminary Gold Cup rosters but were not selected for their nation’s final roster. Fellow Trinidadian Mekeil Williams was left off their final team, while Jordan Dover had to withdraw his name from consideration for Guyana because of injury.
