PITTSBURGH (September 14, 2017) – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have signed goalkeeper Brenden Alfery for the remainder of the 2017 season, pending USL and USSF approval.
Alfery, 23, who originally received his first professional contract from the Hounds prior to the 2016 season, rejoins the club after last playing for the Fort Pitt Regiment of the NPSL.
“Brenden has trained with us for the past week and has shown very well,” head coach Dave Brandt said. “His game minutes in NPSL this summer I think have matured him even more as a goalkeeper and he has always been a very athletic and excellent shot stopper.
“With season-ending injuries to both [Keasel Broome and Trey Mitchell], we are fortunate to have in Brenden a keeper who is fit, healthy in form, and already having had experience with our organization”
A native of Cheswick, Pennsylvania, Alfery has spent the better part of both his amateur and professional career in Allegheny County. He competed for Central Catholic High School before starting his collegiate career at Division III Grove City College. Following his sophomore year at Grove City, Alfery transferred to Robert Morris University (RMU) and registered seven shutouts across 37 starts from 2014-15.
The Hounds signed Alfery for the 2016 season, where he served as a reserve keeper. Following his stint with Pittsburgh, he returned to the Regiment, which he had played for during the summer at his time at RMU.
The club expects Alfery to be available for this weekend’s match against the Rochester Rhinos. Additionally, MLS loanee Alex Kapp has been returned to Minnesota United FC in a corresponding roster move.
