CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 4, 2019) – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2-1-5) tied the Charleston Battery (4-1-3), 2-2, on Saturday at MUSC Health Stadium.
The Hounds began the scoring early in the match with goals from both Kevin Kerr and Kenardo Forbes in the first 12 minutes of action. However, the Battery tied it up with second half goals from Zeiko Lewis (a penalty kick) and Nicque Daley.
“I think it’s a game we’re going to regret right now, but we need to move forward,” head coach Bob Lilley said. “It’s typically a good result in Charleston. I thought we battled well. I thought we were ready to play. I thought we executed the game plan really well. In the second half, we lost our way a bit and they had the momentum when they got the penalty.”
First Half
The Hounds started the scoring early at MUSC Health Stadium.
Fielding an up-field pass from Joe Greenspan, Forbes sprinted up the center of the pitch before differing to Kerr, who ran to his left side. Kerr then belted a shot past Charleston goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky to give the Hounds an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute.
Seven minutes later, Forbes was the one who found the back of the net. The midfielder, standing just inside of the penalty box, flicked his right foot in the air to bat a ball from Ryan James into the net.
Pittsburgh held Charleston to one shot in the first half.
Second Half
The script flipped in the second half.
Being awarded a penalty kick, the Battery turned to Lewis, who ultimately beat goalkeeper Kyle Morton to the bottom right-hand corner to draw within one goal in the 76th minute.
Five minutes later, Lewis assisted the equalizer, which came off the right foot of Daley. The shot beat Morton to the top right-hand corner.
Morton, who made two saves over the course of the match, came up big for the Hounds in the 88th minute, when he blocked away a dangerous shot on target by Lewis.
Hound of the Match
Kenardo Forbes was all over the scoresheet, posting both a goal and an assist. The midfielder also led the club with two key passes.
Stat of the Game
With his goal, Kevin Kerr tied Corey Hertzog for the third-most league goals (27) in club history.
What’s Next
Riverhounds SC will enter a bye week, not playing again until the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 14. Depending on the winner of the first round match between Erie Commodores FC and Dayton Dutch Lions, the squad will either travel to Erie or stay home at Highmark Stadium to battle Dayton.
