PITTSBURGH (October 28, 2020) – Today, the United Soccer League (USL) announced the founding members of its USL Academy League East-Central Division, which includes the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Development Academy (RDA).
RDA players on the boys side between U15-U19 will be eligible to compete. The inaugural season of the Academy League is set to kick off in spring of 2021 and will provide clubs in all three of the USL’s senior divisions with an elite youth development and competition platform.
“We are delighted to be a part of the USL Academy starting in 2021,” Academy Director Scott Gibson said. “As a program, we are continuously working to improve the opportunities afforded to our players and the USL Academy League will certainly add increased value to our overall developmental structure. This will be an added opportunity for the top performing boys in the program and will complement our Boys ECNL schedule.”
Joining Riverhounds SC in the East-Central Division will be Cleveland Force SC (future USL League Two), Flint City Bucks (USL League Two), Grand Rapids FC (USL League Two), Indy Eleven (USL Championship) and Louisville City FC (USL Championship).
All clubs participating in the USL Academy League will field one elite youth team, made up of the top U15-U19 athletes in their organization. With a set of league-mandated standards in place, the league will ensure players’ exposure to a high level of competition and development resulting from direct ties to the organization’s USL senior team.
The launch of the USL Academy League will help all USL clubs identify top prospects and provide more players with the opportunity to compete against professionals at a younger age.
Additional founding members of the USL Academy League may still be confirmed in the coming months. For more information on the USL Academy League, visit usl-academy.com/academy-league.
