PITTSBURGH (October 31, 2021) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, the third seed out of the Atlantic Division, will travel to face Central Division No. 2 Birmingham Legion FC in an Eastern Conference Quarterfinal that will be played Sunday at 5 p.m., the league announced today.
The match at BBVA Field in Birmingham, Ala., will be the last of eight to be played in the opening round of the USL Championship Playoffs, presented by TwinSpires. The winner will advance to face the winner between the Tampa Bay Rowdies and FC Tulsa in the conference semifinals the following weekend.
The Hounds (17-8-7) are one of three teams — along with Louisville City FC and Phoenix Rising FC — who have reached the USL playoffs in each of the past four seasons. This will be the second consecutive season the Hounds have started the playoffs on the road, after losing 2-0 in the conference quarterfinals to Louisville a year ago.
Birmingham (18-6-8) is in the playoffs for the third consecutive year. They were eliminated by the Hounds in the 2019 conference quarterfinals by a 7-0 score at Highmark Stadium, and they fell in the same round last year to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, 4-2.
The match will be shown locally on 22 The Point, and it will be available to be streamed on ESPN+.
